Essay on Violence - 733 Words
Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi-cultural society are out-numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence. While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans. Domestic violence, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when a person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and controlâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, ââ¬Å"Gang wars 6 Deadâ⬠. This event had taken place in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like ââ¬Å"Six victims in six monthsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"calculated executionsâ⬠. It also contained terms like ââ¬Å"Bloodsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Cripsâ⬠. These terms and sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities. In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given schools their own police officers. Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005 statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6 out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming and scary. It is extremely important to get rid of such sinister crimes in our communities because it robs the victims of their innocence, self-esteem, confidence, and even trust in our society. The Starry night Now the darkness took over the sky and a chill ran down my body. The wispy breeze was cold too. The somber path curving up to the ghastly trivial hill, on which I walked alone. The path ran amidst prickly scrubs trampled by the locals. On the path were laid water drenched leaves from the shower in the afternoon. The sky was illuminated with tiny emotive objects. Under he colossal tree laid a pit of dry leaves with some streaks of gray smoke making their way through the long butted sack of heat. The starry night started with a chilled breeze blowing and fireflies rode the air current making their way through to safer grounds. I made myself comfortable on soft damp grass and lay down. A man stood on the front, barring the view. He crushed a stalk in his mouth, a Mexican poncho crowned his head, and he bore a cowboy outfit on a lean build. He had his own way, e stood tall with a silhouette marking his practical personality. He asked ââ¬Å"what are you doing out here, kid? â⬠I was bewildered and I said Just had food, ââ¬Ëam chilling, you? â⬠He kept quiet, wind blew, the leaves rattled and the light smoke hustled to get attention. The Challenge of studying aboard free essay sample
As a student, personally think that the most challenge thing is the academic study. The challenge of academic language study consists in following classes, reading textbooks in timely period (Line, Hi), understanding professors words, taking lecture notes, and giving oral presentations (Zinnia, Hong), asking professors questions and interacting in seminar discussions and so on. I, personally, think the reading and oral speech are very hard to international students especially to Chinese students in Saint Louis University because all y Chinese friends are struggling in reading English texts and communicating clearly in class. In colleges, students have many resources to read before and after classes. The challenges in reading reflect in two aspects. First, the number of reading assignments are more than that you excepted. My friends me all struggle to finish our reading every day. Especially those classes belong to Arts and Science, such as History, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. On average, students have fifteen classes one week, and we need to read all the materials before the classes to follow our professors. We will write a custom essay sample on The Challenge of studying aboard or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page If the professors always teach one chapter that has fifty pages in each class, we have to read and understand 750 pages academic knowledge. My friend Anna in the EPA 120 class complained she always spend five to six hours on Theology reading assignments before each Theology class. (Zinnia, Hong) And my other classmate Isabel told me she has to spend more than forty hours on reading in every week. (Lully, Shah) really understand them. Take me as an example, am taking Management class that my professor Mr..Katz requires us to read two chapters more than one hundred pages before class and it really needs or hours. Besides, I need to read the Typhoon tonight, which is a twenty- five pages long dialogue that was written by Plato. Another aspect is that the reading resources are extremely difficult. We can see many academic words and new definition in every page. We need to stop and read careful about these difficult but important academic vocabularies. As an international student, the new words make our reading more difficult than that of America students because Of the language barrier.I had an exam that includes fifty five problems of my Philosophy class last Monday, and all the American dents finished it early, while other language-speech students are still struggling to read the title. Because we are not Native Americans, we cannot understand all words in books (even some American students cannot know all words, you could say some words is even difficult to American students, much less international students), we have to check new words and it will reduce our reading speed. In Theology texts, I always face some uncommon words like deism, theism , materialism and animism and so on.They are hard to understand because they are not a physical thing, but instead abstract, socia l, or conceptual words. When I preview my Chemistry textbook, the periodic table of the elements like Tellurium, Bismuth and Rhenium already make me dizzy because the names of elements are hard and unfamiliar for me. In China, students just need to sit down and listen their professors words and take notes. We dont have any discussion, group study and presentation that really need good skills of communication in our classes in China.Thats why Chinese students look uncomfortable and lack confidence during class discussion and presentation in the first in American classrooms. However, in general, American students have a lot of experience in test taking and at expressing their Opinions in class. The educational models that they have been received from their primary schools to now engage them speak out and argue with others. They sometimes argue with their teachers in class, give teachers suggestions on things that need changing, or even criticize their ideas. For us, it is not easy to adapt this kind of classes because it is not only about class, it is more about the different styles of lectures. Last Ethel 00, my roofless asked us a question that is about the Buddhism. As a Chinese, I know the basic information about Buddhism like its origin, its major concept and its meditation. However, I just kept silence because I really dont know how to say these in English. Cannot speak out my ideas also because I was afraid about my pronunciation is not good.In the beginning of this semester, was taking the Public Speaking class, which is focus on speech skills because hope can improve my oral speak and brave to speak out. However, when went to classroom and looked all my classmates are Americans and they look ere confident. During this class, students answered questions, speak out their feelings and interacted with professor very well. Felt nervous, depressed and isolated. Looking at the syllabus of the class, found that we have at least ten speeches this semester and I backed out. After the class, decided to drop it and planned to choose it in the next year. For other language students, understanding Language in the classroom is one thing, but understanding American students and how they talk and interact, that might have required even further adjustment for us. My friend Lully told me, her American classmates think she always drag them down when they have to work together during the Con class because during the class discussion, she cannot give some good ideas and solutions. Sometimes, she is struggling to figure out what is the question or follow the American students ideas.

Future of the Music Industry Essay Example
Future of the Music Industry Essay Example Future of the Music Industry Essay Future of the Music Industry Essay Future of the Music Industry It seems as though the first era of digital music may have come to an end. Napster died, P2P lived in some black market twilight zone, streaming services on ad-supported revenue were suffocated by unsustainably high licensing fees, and subscription services sputtered along, never quite capturing the imaginations of music fans. 2009 ended in a flurry of acquisitions (LaLa, iLike (Ilike)), launches (Vevo) and shutdowns (iMeem (imeem)), which dramatically rearranged the digital music landscape. When the dust finally settles, expect digital music to begin anew. With that in mind, here are my five predictions for music in the next 12 months. 1. Labels Will Get Smart Itââ¬â¢s been coming for more than a decade, but major labels are starting to grasp the digital opportunity. Theyââ¬â¢re licensing music on more sustainable terms, diversifying their business model, investing in new technology and, most critically, understanding more than ever what it means to be truly consumer-led. As market leaders, major labels have the resources and the networks to profit most from the changes currently taking place. The move from physical to digital hasnââ¬â¢t been as fast as many people might have wished, but thatââ¬â¢s because digital still doesnââ¬â¢t pay like physical does. CDs, when they sell well, still mean big money. Digital isnââ¬â¢t like that. But thatââ¬â¢s changing, and as major labels have shrunk, their capacity for change has increased. Expect 2011 to be the year that the bad press on the major labels starts becoming more favorable. : The promises of the digital age, with a deeper understanding of the music consumer, integrated ticketing and merchandise, direct-to-consumer sales, and fans as marketing teams, are all about to become a reality, and major labels will lead the charge. 2. Physical CD Sales Will Continue to Decline To ensure at least one of my predictions comes true, Iââ¬â¢m going to forecast that globally, sales of physical CDs will decline substantially by 2011. Thatââ¬â¢s one thing you can definitely count on. 3. Release Strategies Will Evolve The traditional model of building buzz through radio singles followed by a carefully timed album launch will still be the norm for commercial pop music. But at the edges, weââ¬â¢re going to start seeing a new model for releasing music thatââ¬â¢s more attuned to the diverse community of music consumers. The new model, pioneered by Topspin Media, will be the multi-tiered, staggered release. Artists will offer free, full streams and selected downloads early to the curious and the devoted, building their fan-base as they grow. Traditional release schedules will follow, in tandem with more innovative products, at more diverse prices, to more accurately segmented groups of fans. Rather than just a plastic CD, weââ¬â¢ll start seeing multiple tiers of music product: free streams and low quality mp3s, simple digital and physical packages, enhanced audio and packaging on digital and physical releases, and then levels of premium products including vinyl, merchandise, and increased access to the artist. We still think of music in its physical form as a CD on the shelf. Increasingly, weââ¬â¢re going to understand it as a suite of music products, for example: T-Shirts, mugs, books, framed art, signed lyric sheets, USBs, and once-in-a-lifetime music experiences. 4. Music Will Live Legitimately in the Cloud Itââ¬â¢s been talked about for a number of years now, but by 2012 we will start thinking of music less as a finite product and more as an infinite, on-demand reservoir to be accessed at any time for a fee. This process will roll out in tandem with the evolution of music ââ¬Å"products. Even if music is universally accessible, itââ¬â¢s still key to peopleââ¬â¢s idenity. We still need something to put on a coffee table, something to pass to friends, something to put under the Christmas tree and something to signal to the world that ââ¬Å"this music is part of me and I want you to know it. â⬠iTunes, as ever, is in the driverââ¬â¢s seat to make the most of this change. Its acquisition of LaLa could see them own the streaming marke t as it currently owns digital music. Spotifyââ¬â¢s buzz seems to have cooled, but itââ¬â¢s still the best-placed streaming service to take advantage of the cloudââ¬â¢s potential. Groovesharkââ¬â¢s growth, if it continues, is going to make it a serious player in the streaming game. MySpace (MySpace), with iMeem and iLike in its back pocket may also consolidate its place in the land of the streaming. And finally, Google (Google) ââ¬â- who owns the bridge over the moat, digitally speaking ââ¬â- could pull the rug from everyone and facilitate properly integrated music streaming into its search platform. Whoever emerges at the front of this pack will be in new territory, providing access to the worldââ¬â¢s music, anytime, anywhere on any device. 5. Who Really Knows? Thereââ¬â¢s some as-yet untested consumer models building momentum. For example: Guvera is promising the world, not just to the music industry, but to advertisers as well. Whether consumers buy into its advertisement for content exchange remains to be seen. Rdio, with serious pedigree and some big money backing it, hasnââ¬â¢t poked its head up completely yet, but you can be assured that whatever it offers isnââ¬â¢t going to be lightweight. Lost in all the buzz is the fact that some legacy digital music companies - Last. FM (Last. fm), Pandora (Pandora) and MySpace to name a few - still have the established brands, the existing customer base, and the revenue streams that preserve their lives beyond the froth of the tech/music blogosphere. And of course, thereââ¬â¢s Facebook (Facebook). The biggest virtual country in the world, Facebook and music have always been awkward bedfellows. If Zuckerberg and Co. an figure a way to integrate music with the Facebook platform, the existing user base would guarantee a big chunk of the market overnight. In conclusion, it all adds up to create a big void of uncertainty, one that will be filled in the way the web knows best - by its end-users. What those end-users decide they love will ultimately determine the winners and losers in the digital music economy. As a passionate music fan, I canââ¬â¢t wait for the competition to heat up. For those on the digital frontier, music rea lly is better than itââ¬â¢s ever been.

Yugoslavia to Officially Become Serbia and Montenegro
Yugoslavia to Officially Become Serbia and Montenegro On Tuesday, February 4, 2003, the parliament of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia voted to disband itself, officially dissolving the country that was created in 1918 as The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Seventy-four years ago, in 1929, the Kingdom changed its name to Yugoslavia, a name which will now live in history. A New Country The new country taking its place is called Serbia and Montenegro. The name Serbia and Montenegro is not new - it was used by countries such as the United States during the time of Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevics rule, refusing to recognize Yugoslavia as an independent country. With the ouster of Milosevic, Serbia and Montenegro became recognized internationally as anà independent countryà and rejoined the United Nations on November 1, 2000, with the official long-form name the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The new country will have dual capitals - Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, will serve as the primary capital while Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro will administer that republic. Some federal institutions will be headquartered in Podgorica. The two republics will create a new joint administration, including a parliament with 126 members and a president. Kosovo remains part of the union and within the territory of Serbia. Kosovo remains administered by NATO and the United Nations. Serbia and Montenegro could break apart as independent countries through referendum as early as 2006, through a European Union-brokered accorded approved by the Yugoslav parliament before its dissolution on Tuesday. Citizens tend to be unhappy with the move and call the new country Solania after EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Macedonia all declared independence in 1991 or 1992 and broke away from the 1929 federation. The name Yugoslavia means land of the southern Slavs. After the move, the Croatian newspaperà Novi Listà referred to the tumultuous situation, Since 1918, this is the seventh name change of a state which has continuously existed since Yugoslavia was first proclaimed. Serbia has a population of 10 million (2 million of which live in Kosovo) and Montenegro has a population of 650,000.

Overview of Second Century Christianity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Overview of Second Century Christianity - Essay Example One of great import was the communicatio idiomatum. What were the scriptures and how were they to be interpreted and understood was such a vital question. Many solutions were being out forward and the church fathers of this period had had to propose and refute. The senses of scripture emerged and became part of interpretive strategy but not without their own specific problems. The influence of the Greek and platonic times were still evident in society and was making their impact felt even in the Christian faith. Gnosticism would emerge and be dealt with but never with complete success. The church continued to grow and with the passing of time the various councils began to play a critical role in the defense of authentic faith, and the role of liturgies would become invaluable. Christianity, which started as a first century Jewish cult spread rapidly over the Greco-Roman world. Its early period can be divided into two definite phases. First is the apostolic period. The Post Apostolic period stretched from the late first century until the Council of Nicaea in 325. The area of our focus namely the 2nd century fits into the Post Apostolic period. This was also known as the Ante Nicene period. ... Pauline Christianity and Gnostic Christianity flourished. This century presented challenges to the church fathers in terms of persecution, doctrinal conflicts other than the very challenge of authoritatively and resolutely continuing the great commission in the absence of the apostles. What was the need for communicatio idiomatum? One of the functions of Bishops during this period was to refute heresies. These heresies were largely Christological. They had a problem understanding the mystery of Christ being divine as well as human. For instance Docetism believed that Jesusââ¬â¢s humanity was an illusion, which was refuted by Ignatius of Antioch in AD 110. ââ¬Å"Many groups were dualistic, maintaining that reality was composed into two radically opposing parts: matter, usually seen as evil, and spirit, seen as good. Orthodox Christianity, on the other hand, held that both the material and spiritual worlds were created by God and were therefore both good, and that this was represen ted in the unified divine and human natures of Christ.â⬠1 These arose due to the mystery of Christ. Theologians assign the name mystery to revealed truths that are beyond the power of natural understanding. The earliest of Christians grappled with the mystery of the nature of Christ and the Gnostics of the 2nd century had a real issue with this. The fact that one person can have two natures is problematic. Terminology is a culprit. There is terminology for being divine and there is terminology for being human but no terminology for being both at the same time. Theological language of that day was insufficient for this purpose. The easiest of explanations is to say that he sometimes acted as a human and

Theory of Managing and Leading Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1
Theory of Managing and Leading Change - Essay Example The evaluation of this decision rests solely on the shoulders of the decision makers at AEGON who were doing their best to expand their business realms within different international markets. Since comprehending the environment was mandatory on their part, their next step was to get familiarized with the key issues that they shall be getting used to as far as managing operations were concerned. This is a certain aspect that reduction of uncertainty will come about as a positive step for the sake of managing and leading a positive change, in line with the AEGON case. The theory of managing and leading change is essentially the inherent basis for the sake of AEGON since it wishes to move towards the UK market and explore the market there. Since the people have a diabolical and confusing perspective regarding the life insurance and pensions industry in general, AEGON is marred with such viewpoints on the part of the people and this is where leading a positive change comes into the equat ion. It shall resolve the ambiguities that exist within the related domains and create a room of optimism all around. Appointing a new CEO for the UK market is a step in the right direction as it will set the basis for bringing in a new thought process into the fray. Also instituting audit committees would resolve the issues which have sprung up for all the wrong reasons within AEGON for a specified period of time. Essentially speaking, leading and managing change is a difficult process which once undertaken can only rein in positive results for organizations and their top management realms. Hence it would be a good option for AEGON to enter the UK market and make a name for its own self which will be the basis of its success in the years to follow (Marshak, 2004:112). Ã
